How does an education loan for abroad studies work?
An education loan for abroad studies is taken by the student with a parent or guardian as co-applicant. It can cover tuition, living costs, travel and insurance. The lender issues a sanction letter you can use as proof of funds, pays tuition directly to the university, and repayment usually starts after your course ends.
The hard part is not finding a lender. It is matching the right loan type to your university, course and family finances, and getting the sanction in time for your visa. A loan approved two weeks too late can cost you an intake.
We map your total cost of attendance, shortlist lenders that fund your university and course, prepare the file with you, and track the process until disbursement.

Secured vs unsecured education loans
Neither is better in every case. The right choice depends on your collateral, your university and how quickly you need the sanction.
| Factor | Secured loan | Unsecured loan |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral | Property, fixed deposit or similar security | No collateral, based on the university, course and co-applicant |
| Typical lenders | Public and private sector banks | NBFCs, private banks and some international lenders |
| Interest rate | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Loan amount | Can be higher, linked to collateral value | Depends on the university and course profile |
| Processing time | Longer, because collateral is valued and verified | Often faster |
Interest rates, margins and limits change. We compare current offers from lenders at the time you apply.

Documents needed for an education loan
Most lenders ask for the documents below. Secured loans also need property or deposit papers.
- University offer or admission letter with the cost of attendance
- KYC for the student and co-applicant: PAN, Aadhaar and passport
- Class 10, 12 and degree marksheets, plus test scores
- Co-applicant income proof: salary slips or ITRs and recent bank statements
- Collateral documents for a secured loan, such as property papers or an FD receipt
- Passport-size photographs and signed application forms
Education loans: frequently asked questions
Can I get an education loan without collateral?
Yes. Unsecured education loans are available for many universities and courses, mainly from NBFCs and some private banks. Approval and the amount depend on the university, the course and your co-applicant's income, and the interest rate is usually higher than a secured loan.
When does repayment start?
Most lenders offer a moratorium covering the course period plus a few months after it. Some ask you to pay simple interest during the course, which lowers the total cost. Terms vary by lender, so we compare them before you choose.
Can a loan sanction letter be used as proof of funds for a visa?
For many countries, yes, provided it comes from an acceptable lender and shows the right amount and details. Each country has its own rules on how funds must be shown, so we check the requirement for your destination before the letter is issued.
Is education loan interest tax deductible in India?
Under the old tax regime, interest on an education loan from an approved lender can be claimed as a deduction under Section 80E, for up to eight years from the start of repayment. Confirm your eligibility with a tax adviser, as it depends on the regime you choose.
Does Linked Global lend money?
No. We are not a lender. We help you compare lenders, prepare your application and plan the timeline. The loan agreement is always between you and the bank or NBFC.
